Figure Skating Movies

This is a list of some figure skating movies. Some of these movies are well known; others are not. Some of these movies tell true stories, but most of these movies are fictional figure skating stories.

1. Ice Princess (2005)

This is a Disney movie about a teenage girl who is a physics genius. In order to win a scholarship to Harvard, she works on developing a special formula to make figure skating moves better. She learns how to skate in the process and becomes a figure skating champion. Famous figure skaters Michelle Kwan and Brian Boitano make special guest appearances in this movie.

2. Go Figure

This is a very cute Disney movie. A talented teenage figure skater dreams of being a champion and is discovered by a famous Russian skating coach. She does not have enough money to train with this famous coach who is associated with a private boarding school, but she has the opportunity to get a hockey scholarship so she can figure skate. She accepts the scholarship and learns to play hockey. She changes in the process. She learns about teamwork and making friends by playing hockey.

3. The Cutting Edge

During the 1988 Winter Olympics, an ice hockey player has his professional career cut short after an accident. He is then recruited by a Russian figure skating coach to skate pairs with a very spoiled and rich figure skater. At first, they don't get along, but eventually they become a very good pair team and make it to the 1992 Olympics and fall in love.

4. Ice Castles

This movie was made in 1979. Its cast includes Robby Benson, Colleen Dewhurst, and Tom Skerritt. Lynn Holly Johnson, who was a beautiful and talented skater and actress in the 1970s, plays a young and talented teen from Iowa who is discovered by a top skating coach. She gets a chance to go to Colorado to be trained to become an Olympic champion. She gets injured and becomes blind shortly after becoming successful at skating, but returns to compete and skate again.

5. The Ice Princess (1998)

This movie stars 1984 Olympic Champion Katarina Witt. This is the classic tale of Cinderella put on the ice. Katarina Witt plays a poor maid named Ella. She invites the Prince to skate with her and he falls in love with her. Then, Ella is thrown into prison since her employer's daughters become jealous. The Prince then searches in vain for the beautiful stranger, but then she miraculously appears at a ball in his palace. The pair falls in love and skates together.

6. The Cutting Edge - Going for the Gold (2005)

This is the sequel to THE CUTTING EDGE (1991). Christy Carlson Romano stars as the daughter of the original movie's pair. She is a single skater and is injured. The injury means that she is not able to do the many triple jumps required for singles, but she is able to do pair skating. She interviews many partners and an in-line stunt skater is the best choice. At first they don't like eachother, but as time goes on they become an amazing pair skating team and fall in love.

7. The Skating Rink (1975)

This story features a boy lacking self-confidence due to the fact that he stutters. A former figure skating star decides to transform a local abandoned factory into a skating rink and offers the boy a chance to skate and receive free instruction. He does learn to skate and beomes really good. He surprises his family with a pair skating performance with the rink owner's young wife at the rink's opening night. He then gets a job teaching skating and beomes confident and happy.

8. Promise Kept, A: The Oksana Baiul Story (1995)

This is a biographical drama which tells the story of Oksana Baiul who won the 1994 Winter Olympics. There is not much skating in the movie, but the story is very moving, and there is a performance by the real Oksana Baiul at the end of the movie.

9. On Thin Ice: The Tai Babilonia Story

This is a made-for-TV movie. It tells the story of Olympic figure skater Tai Babilonia. Tai was paired up with Randy Gardner as a child. In 1979 they won the World Pair title. Randy Gardner suffers a groin injury and is unable to compete just before they were about to perform in the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. After that, Tai and Randy had a successful professional career, but Tai was unhappy. She drinks heavily and attempts suicide. She recovers and the film ends happily.

10. Blades of Courage

This is a Canadian movie. It was originally called "Skate." It is about a talented Canadian teen who loves to skate. She does well in the Canadian national championship, and gets to go to the World Figure Skating Championship. The Canadian Skating Federation gives her a chance to train with a top coach, but the coach is very strict and ruins her. She returns home defeated, but eventually gets back on the ice and competes and performs again.
